چکیده

This paper studies cyclical properties of worker flows and job flows simultaneously in a multiple-worker version of the search/matching model where firms decide how many workers they hire or shed under the presence of idiosyncratic and aggregate uncertainties. Wages are determined by intra-firm bargaining between a firm and its multiple workers. Our calibration incorporates microand macro-level evidence on worker and job flows. We show that the dynamic stochastic equilibrium of the model successfully replicates important cyclical features of worker flows and job flows. In particular, the model correctly predicts that hires from unemployment move countercyclically while the job creation rate move procyclically. We also show that the multiple-worker-firm model improves on the quantitative performance of the standard search/matching framework. First, the model fully accounts for volatilities of unemployment and vacancies when the outside option parameter is at 80% of aggregate labor productivity. Second, the model generates the strong negative relationship between unemployment and vacancies. JEL Classification: E24, E32, J63, J64

No . 13 - 9 Worker Flows and Job Flows : a Quantitative

This paper studies the quantitative properties of a multiple-worker firm matching model with on-the-job search where heterogeneous firms operate decreasing-returns-toscale production technology. We focus on the model’s ability to replicate the business cycle features of job flows, worker flows between employment and unemployment, and job-to-job transitions. The calibrated model successfully rep...

Worker Flows, Job Flows and Firm Wage Policies: An Analysis of Slovenia*

Like many transition economies, Slovenia is undergoing profound changes in the workings of the labor market with potentially greater flexibility in terms of both wage and employment adjustment. We investigate the impact of the changing labor market for Slovenia using unique longitudinal matched employer-employee data that permits measurement of employment transitions and wages for workers and l...

Did the Housing Price Bubble Clobber Local Labor Market Job and Worker Flows When It Burst ?

We integrate local labor market data on worker flows (accession and separation rates), job flows (creation and destruction rates), employment levels, and earnings with MSA-level data on housing prices and local area unemployment, in order to study the local labor market dynamics associated with the U.S. housing price bubble of the late 2000s. We proceed to study the magnitude and timing of the ...

The Cyclical Behavior of Short-term and Long-term Job Flows

Using a band pass filter, this paper estimates plant-level job flows at different frequencies and examines the characteristics of the high frequency (transitory) and low frequency (permanent) component flows. Because high frequency employment movements, which likely result in changes in the utilization of plant assets, and low frequency movements, which likely coincide with the restructuring of...

Labor Market Flows in the Cross Section and Over Time 20 March 2011

Many theoretical models of labor market search imply a tight link between worker flows (hires and separations) and job gains and losses at the employer level. Partly motivated by these theories, we exploit establishment-level data from U.S. sources to study the relationship between worker flows and job flows in the cross section and over time. We document strong, highly nonlinear relationships ...
